Read Anything
Listen to PDFs, photos and text
Download on the App StoreWhat it is
Read Anything pulls the text out of PDFs and photos and reads it to you. Check documents by ear on your commute, while doing the dishes, or at night when your eyes are tired.
- Reads scanned PDFs and photos too, where the text is only an image
- Paste a link to a blog post or news article and it brings in just the article
- Keeps playing with the screen off or while you use other apps
- Remembers where you left off. Pick up on your Mac what you were listening to on your iPhone
- No sign-up, no login. Text recognition and the built-in voices run on your device
Questions
First check that your iPhone isn't on silent. It's also common for earphones to be connected to another device.
Recognition gets shaky when a photo is tilted or the text is small. Taking the photo again is the surest fix. You can also correct the text yourself with Edit Item on that item in the list. If you've added an OpenAI key, Re-extract with OpenAI is available too.
Yes. Copy the address and paste it in + → Link. Ads and menus are left out and only the article is read. You can also send the page you're reading with Share → Read Anything, on iPhone and in Safari on Mac.
Yes, from version 1.0.31. Add the post's link and the caption comes in along with the text found in its photos.
A video has no text for the app to read. If you have a transcript or summary, paste it in + → Type or Paste and it will be read as is.
Some sites have their own share window inside the page. That window belongs to the site, so the app doesn't appear there. Use your browser's own Share button instead (at the bottom of the screen on iPhone, next to the address bar on Mac), or paste the address in + → Link.
Yes, with the Shortcuts app on iPhone and Mac. Add the Add Text action from Read Anything to a shortcut and connect what you want to send to its text field. When it runs, the text goes into your collection and soon shows up on your other devices on the same iCloud.
Yes. When you have more than one collection, All appears above the list and shows every item in one place.
When the next item starts, there's a short pause and a chime, so you can hear it without looking. To listen to one item at a time, turn off Play Next Item Automatically in Settings.
It's probably an article only subscribers can read in full. The app marks these as possibly incomplete. It can't stand in for a subscription, so read those on the publisher's site.
Devices on the same iCloud account keep their collections in step on their own. First check that both devices use the same account. Sync Across Devices at the top of Settings shows when they last synced.
Downloaded audio stays on each device. It's too large to sync, so each device downloads its own.
Yes. The app works the same and your collections are saved on that device only. Only syncing between devices is paused.
In Settings → Pronunciation Fixes, write how it should sound and it will be read that way.
For a more natural voice, create an API key in your own OpenAI account and add it in Settings. You pay OpenAI directly; the app does not sit in between. Everything in the app works without a key.
Five steps. A computer makes it easier.
- Sign up at platform.openai.com. If you already have a ChatGPT account, you can log in with it.
- In Settings → Billing at the top right, add a card and buy a small amount of credit. The key only works after you add credit. If you skip this, the key won't make any sound.
- Open API keys on the left and choose Create new secret key.
- A long string starting with
sk-appears. You can't see it again after you close that screen, so copy it right away. - Paste it into the OpenAI key field in the app's Settings and tap Save and Check. A green mark means it's working.
The key is saved on this device only. It is never sent to the developer.
OpenAI charges by the length of the text, at its own rates. You can see what you've used at any time at platform.openai.com/usage, and it stops at the credit you added, so nothing more is charged without you knowing.
Text you've listened to stays on the device. Listening to it again costs nothing.
Almost always the account has no credit. Check step 2 above.
Other causes: a space came along when you copied the key, or you made a new key but the app still has the old one. Try Check Key Again in Settings.
In a hurry? Set Voice Engine to Built-in Voice and you can listen right away without a key.
It should keep playing with the screen off. If it stops, check that background activity isn't restricted for this app in your iPhone's settings.
The app shows Korean when Korean is the first language on your device, and English otherwise. To choose yourself, go to Settings → Display → Language. The change applies when you close and reopen the app.
It stays on your devices. Nothing is sent to the developer's servers. See the Privacy Policy for details.
